The Bookmaster table could be heard enjoying what was an extremely lively and often boisterous evening. We were very pleased to have guests from Pearson, Random House (TBS) and Gardners. We also had Alan Parker at our table attending what he told us was his 32nd BIA ceremony!
The award giving was as slick as ever, with lots of companies and individuals being recognised for the excellent work they do in their field. In terms of awards, the two big ones were picked up by Quercus, who were named Publisher of the Year, and Sainsbury’s who scooped the Bookseller of the Year award.
As usual, judging was thorough and intensive and there were few complaints about the choices of winners across the board. It was clear that while it has been a difficult year for business in general, good quality, innovative and committed bookselling will always achieve great results.
As the evening moved on from awards and wine to cocktails and dancing, it was widely agreed that this is an event that strikes the right balance in terms of entertainment and delivering a serious message. We are proud to be a part of it and look forward to finding out who the best of the best will be next year. In the meantime, we will continue to lobby for a ‘Service Provider to the Book Industry’ award!
Thanks again to all our guests for joining us and to The Bookseller for putting on another fine event.
