Company background
Duka is part of the Norwegian CG Holding Group and is Sweden’s leading retailer of glassware, porcelain, kitchenware and gift items. Its product line consists of items from such well-known brands as Orrefors, Kosta Boda, Höganäs Keramik, Boda Nova, Iittala and Rörstrand, as well as Duka’s own brand. The chain’s retail network consists of some 100 stores across Sweden.
Duka employs 500 people and had a turnover of approximately EUR 110 million in 2002.
Business issues
Duka sells the majority of its products through a combination of wholly owned shops and franchises. In 1994 Duka was owned by the ICA conglomerate, which suggested that Duka use a tailored system to run its business. The software maker involved ended up in bankruptcy, however, before a new system could be fully implemented.
Duka used this opportunity to look for a new business system, focusing mainly on distribution requirements. The company also needed to be sure that its new business partner understood the wholesale distribution industry and was able to demonstrate experience with similar organisations. Unlike its previous software supplier, Duka was looking for a long term and stable business partnership.
