Schenker integrates IT systems with IBS integration software

News & Events 2007-03-20

IBS will redesign the interfaces between the ERP system and other software and the transportation fleet of Schenker with the help of its IBS Integrator software.

The Finnish subsidiary of Schenker uses several IT systems and platforms. Integrating these is a key issue in further development.

“Integrations are often technically challenging and time consuming. We chose IBS Integrator to respond to the technical challenges of integration and to speed up development processes. In many cases the time needed for development will decrease by 50 per cent, says Risto Nuutinen,” CIO of Schenker Oy.

“As the trend is towards user-friendly SOA architecture, we wanted to make sure that the system would enable WebService interfaces towards clients and other stakeholders.”

One of the requirements was clear and sufficiently extensive interfaces to several different IT systems. A key requirement was ease of maintenance and follow-up.

The most important decision-making criterion was, however, support to the iSeries or AS400 environment. Expertise in this area spoke in favor of IBS, since the most critical of Schenker’s IT systems run on the iSeries platform. “Schenker is an excellent reference for us. As a transport company, its environment is unusually challenging. The number of transactions and the need for integration are significant,” says Product Manager Juha Berg from IBS. It is especially important that the software be able to meet tight response time requirements, especially at peak hours.

At Schenker, the users of IBS Integrator are mainly experienced application developers, and the number of active users will increase in the future.

“The most significant difference is between the iSeries and Windows environments. Application developers generally know little about the development tools and techniques used earlier by others, so IBS Integrator provides a joint tool for developers operating in different environments,” Risto Nuutinen says.

Several solutions based on IBS Integrator are already in the testing phase. The first of these will enter production during early spring.

IBS Integrator is multi-platform software that integrates systems, applications, databases, web portals and processes. It automates and connects business processes all along the supply chain in manufacturing, distribution and other industries.
